Bio
First and foremost, I love culture. I love my culture and I love yours. Culture is a very important thing to know about. I like learning about how my culture impacts the way I view others, and what I think or react to the other cultures. I've always been a kid that feels like she is a bit of an outcast in her own culture because I was so interested in the broad topic of it. I love learning about cultures not my own, and celebrating my own and others'.

To be culturally aware is to be able to know a great deal about our own culture and be able to analyze, interpret, and understand why certain aspects of culture exist, how they function for us, among other things. It is also to be aware of other cultures differing from our own. Though we'll probably never be able to grasp the essence of our culture and all the cultures in the world that are not our own, it's important to have an understanding and respect for people with a different culture than us. It is important that we understand our culture and know when someone has a different culture than us and is reacting in a certain way because of their culture. It should guide our decisions when working or interacting with people from a different area of the world, and thus most likely a different culture. I think we should embrace differences and not force people to become one universal culture...we'd lose a lot of what makes the world so unique.

Cultural awareness is another form of literacy. It is a sign of education, respectfulness, understanding and compassion towards people, and in some sense, appreciation for what makes us unique, all of which I highly value.

My name is Laura K and I will soon be going to UMASS Boston @ the College of Public and Community Service for the Community Planning major. I am twenty two years old, and though I may seem really serious by this intro, I like to believe I am also really a fun(ny) person. I love to write, especially about things I have experienced. I also love people. I wanted to work with youth education, but realized I am not cut out to do that, I can't handle more than 3 kids at a time really.
